On being an OK cyclist

Well, I’m truly dwelling on some post-season blues after the end of another thoroughly enjoyable summer of track racing. Months of training and week in week out racing: seasons are an intense little melting pot where you feel yourself improving and reaching peak fitness.

Suddenly it’s all over and I’m wondering what I actually achieved.

Of course I am very proud to have won Wellington’s Speed League, the racing way tougher and more competitive than it ever has been and I felt strong and confident throughout.

At the bigger events though, I didn’t quite have what it takes. I didn’t make the top five at Wellington’s Laykold Cup race, and then there were two fifths and an eighth place at the National Championships.

Kind of up there, but not at the pointiest of pointy ends when it matters. In fact that’s probably a decent reflection of my abilities as a cyclist: OK, but no big champion.

On the one hand, I’m fine with this. I race because I love competing, and riding as fast as I can – it’s just a lot of fun. On the other, I’m still hungry and want to be up there with the big dogs at the big races.

So what to do? Take a break, figure out a plan and then start training for next year to see if I can just be a bit more OK than I am now.
